The Design

Once the idea of how the circuit operates is understood, you can design everything else around that principal.

The negative wire is soldered to the negative terminal on the battery holder. The same wire is then soldered directly to the negative leg, that’s the short leg on the IR.
Two separate pieces of wire are necessary for the positive connections. The first end of the positive wire is soldered to the remaining terminal on the battery holder and the other end of this wire is soldered to the switch, it doesn’t matter which side of the switch you do this. The final piece of the positive wire is soldered to the other side of the switch then soldered to the positive leg of the IR, the long leg.
